Laser Cutting Intricate Paper Designs | Maker Experiment
We have a lasermark fiber. And it doesn't do a terrible job but it's not perfect. It has a hard time doing black with white , red with white. What i have noticed online with those colors is turning the power down and something about being out of focus. I could be wrong but i think someone said try adjusting the focus.
Which laser is better to embrace acrylic? CO2 or fiber laser? And which are using?
I would recommend CO2 for acrylic. I use both but I really only use CO2 for acrylic materials.
Nice, than you.
Loved this information! Very helpful. Would've liked to have some base laser settings and wattage of laser used. That's just me being needy, I'm sure.
I used a 60 watt Epilog Fusion M2 40 in this video. I don’t remember the settings off hand but every machine is going to be different. I’d suggest creating a settings grid on a piece of material.
This has been a great video. Thank you for doing this. Very informative. What settings would you suggest to start with for a 55w co2
I would use settings pretty close to what I used in the video to start with. If you’re within 10 watts of mine, you’ll probably get a pretty good result to start with.
Going to miss you buddy!
Just a phone call away man.
@MakerExperiment I know. But still going to miss you.
We live in Maryland and are planning on retiring next year to North Carolina. I will be moving my table/band/miter saws, lathe, cnc router and CO2 laser. I may very likely rent a truck and move my tools myself. The rest will be moved by a moving company. I will get a lift gate truck to do this. Let me know how it goes. We are looking for a house that will allow me to build a separate workshop/barn like building if we can't find one that already has the space.
It was hard for us to find a house that was big enough that already had a shop built while staying in our budget. Depending on what size course you’re looking for, there are definitely options that have a shop already. It sounds like you’ll also have a fun move.
@@MakerExperiment Our current house is very large. Going to downsize to about 4000 sq ft. Need to stay close top DC because our son, daughter-in-law, and 20 month old granddaughter live in DC. Otherwise I would go to Florida. I am originally from southern California and went to Vegas regularly.
@cliffs1956 nice! Depending on your budget, I’ve seen homes in the 3,000-4,000 sq foot range with a shop but they were well out of my price range. I hope you find something. What part of North Carolina?
@@MakerExperiment close to the water :)_ I have been looking in Hertford and close to the outer banks. We have friends who live in OBX, plus being close to a beach may entice out kids to come visit.
@cliffs1956 I may come visit if you do that!
Weld-on 3 is the best choice to use for professional builders. It has the quickest curing time, thinnest solvent, hardest to use tho.
Great video! Thanks! I’m gonna go clean my mirrors!
Definitely a good idea to do that regularly.
What about n acetone
I’ve never tried acetone.
You don't know what you're doing.
Love the video. How do you add the custom border? Thanks
I created it in the design software by offsetting the original logo.
Do any of these adhesives come in colors?
Everything I have seen is clear.
Thanks for the amount of depth of the testing. I am thinking of using acrylic paint. So I guess I will experiment.
Learning is all about experimenting.
Im planning on building my own acrylic aquarium which will be 7x2x2 and this helps. Is Weldon 4 the strongest/chemical bond and the best to use? Most videos I've watched for acrylic aquariums use it but I didnt know if there was a different type of glue that would be just as strong and maybe a little easier to use.
This is more of a solvent that chemically bonds and fuses the material together. It’s not just a glue. I don’t know anything about aquariums but I have seen it used for that.
Could you please share what the dimensions of the completed products are? Thanks!
This one is about 2’ wide by about 15” tall. Those are rough dimensions without looking at the design.
straight up methylene chloride is what most people in my region use.
For surface to surface bonding use uv glue that is used for glass bonding, crystal clear and you have time to push any bubbles out
Good luck with the move. I remember you building that garage. Hope it all goes well. Welcome to the land of humidity.
I’m not looking forward to the humidity at all.
Hi, thanks for the great tutorial. The sticky mat looks great, but it's a little pricey. I have shared access to a laser, and trying to keep the budget close to the HTV and t-shirt costs. What would you recommend as a lower cost alternative? Would taping down to an acrylic sheet work reasonably well?
If you’re going to be doing a lot of t-shirts, you may want to just use a vinyl cutter as you won’t be as limited on types of vinyl. If it’s few and far between, you can tape it to the bed or possibly even use magnets.
@@MakerExperiment thanks! Just five shirts for now, so I'll give those a shot!
@dcuccia best of luck!
I have a question. I ordered an acrylic oxygen cage and it still smells so strong. How can I get rid of the smell or make it cute faster? Thank you!!
I’m honestly not sure. I wish I could help more.
Thank you! Very helpful!
I’m glad.
Is this diode or co2? I'm trying to just cut acrylic with a diode
This is CO2. I don’t think a diode will cut certain colors and kinds of acrylic.
It might be a good idea to hide airtags in your lasers for the move. I dont trust anyone nowadays.
That wouldn’t be a bad idea. These all arrived at Epilog like they were supposed to so all good.
It seems like just yesterday you moved into that house. Good luck with the move to the east coast. I hope you like humidity.
I already know I don’t like humidity. It’ll be a new adventure.
A step by step guide on how to make a laser test grind / chart on a software beside lightburn would be super helpful.
I can do that. I won’t have the machine back for a little while but I’ll see if I can do just the software.
@@MakerExperiment Thank you!! Im trying to make quick reference charts for my students to use so they can pick the right settings for their material. Your videos have been an amazing resource for me.
@braedenhorrox5950 I’m glad that you’ve found them to be helpful.
I got tired watching you, and I broke a sweat watching you as well 🤣.. I do know where one of those lasers went. Great video!
You better be taking care of it 😂.
Good Luck with the move. I thought that you were having that activity as a full time job. Not able to run it full time?
I’m not able to make this my full time at the moment.
Good luck with the move and if you need to see a laser I’m likely only a few hours from you
I appreciate it! I may go through withdrawals.
Good luck with the next chapter. Any special preparation needed before you can move an epilog? I am in the middle of relocating my bussiness as well and we’ll need to move the laser soon.
It’s best if you have the original packaging. The main thing is just securing the head depending on the model. I’d recommend asking Epilog what they’d recommend for the model that you have.
@@MakerExperiment it’s a fusion edge. Thanks, i’ll ask them as well.
@octb1921 I had all of the original foam packaging. Do your best to secure the head so it doesn’t move and if you have the foam, put it around the machine. I also had the pallet it came on so mine actually got picked up by a truck.
Good luck with the new move!!
Thank you!
Why are you moving to North Carolina?
For my day job.
Great Explaination, thankyou !
You’re welcome!
ua-cam.com/video/9Fq13bbpl5Q/v-deo.html
Hello, I would like to buy this machine to print my Mugs that I have myself and I would like to personalize them, thank you in advance for help
Epilog sells them. You can contact them about it if you’re interested in buying one.
Where are you moving to??
NC
New subscriber, great video, except, :D... Do you have a video on the laser cut edge difference right off the laser? We currently flame polish saw cut sanded edges, but want to switch to a laser cut that will provide almost the same flame edge finish. Possible?
Extruded acrylic will have a better cut finish in my experience.
@MakerExperiment , Thank you for the reply. I will try the extruded first. Have a safe Memorial Day weekend.
@DecksNJ you too!
Moving?
Yes
2 things I thought of per countersinking the screw holes, without drilling. First the easy one, the light switch. Make the holes smaller on the backplate and the holes a larger diameter in the sun. Place the screws in the backplate and use the screw head to evenly line up the holes of the sun when attaching it. Now the outlet cover is a little trickier. But I think I have a good solution, but maybe not so cost effective. You’re already doubling thickness, so just cut a “face plate”. Same as above. Make hole smaller on the back plate, larger on the face plate. For the face plate, cut out the openings for the pieces you’re attaching to the backplate. But place all those pieces into the holes cut into the face plate first, like a puzzle. Then attach the backplate. That way all pieces line up. Will also get rid of the sharp edges created by placing the cut pieces by themselves onto the backplate. Or option two, involves a cnc router. Use a thinner backplate piece. And thicker faceplate piece. Cut backplate narrower. Hollow out the face plate to slip over top the backplate. Then it will look like one piece instead of two sandwiched pieces.
Whats the name od the engraver and where can i buy it?
I use Epilog lasers. This one was the Maker 12. If you email me at amakerexperiment@gmail.com I can try to help answer your questions. You can also find information about the machines at EpilogLaser.com.
thank you but why is my red dot pointer not showing
It could be a couple things. 1. Have you made sure it’s turned on at the touchscreen? 2. If it is turned on, can you see it if you put your hand in front of the laser head? If so, your mirror may be so misaligned that it’s not hitting the target.
Always magnetize your screwdriver heads
Probably a good idea.
I just had to replace my x-rail on my Epilog Edge. Pretty simple. I think I spent more time re-aligning the beam than the exchange. Great video.
@GoJoeGo58 alignment definitely took me longer. Glad the video helped.
Hi, thank you for your tutorial…. Why 10% to keep your logo round, how did you determine that percentage?
On average 10-15% is the range I’ve seen work. It kind of depends on the logo but 10% seems to be a good option for most logos.
Thank you, I will try 10 to start! Much appreciated!
@@loriezweifel3364 you’re welcome.
Business side of things👌
Do fingerprints stick to one more than the other one? Had a little project today. Didn't even realise there are different types of acrylic. From the engraving though, I think I am having extruded sheet on my hand and they are fingerprint magnets. Also, do you know if it is possible to reduce the engraving grains by adjusting the speed and power of the run? BTW, we are taught to use a heated wire for bending a sheet in school. That creates a much cleaner bend and it's way easier.
I’m not sure about the fingerprints. It may be possible to reduce engraving grains by putting the laser out of focus a little which will make the beam wider.
@@MakerExperiment Wow, that's actually brilliant. I will never imagine making it out of focus would be useful someday. I would just assume it is always the best to keep the focus sharp. Thanks for the idea. I shall try it next time!
@cwk0505 let me know if it works.
well done! 🤖 theme, sound, visuals, & surprise ending (size) 🖖
Got to love how it even sounds like it’s from Star Wars.
How can you leave the door open for golf clubs and bigger items
It has protections in place so when you open the door it no longer fires. I’m sure there’s ways to make it happen, but I would suggest talking to Epilog about that.
I have done this with HTV to a screen printing screen for screen printing small batches.
I’ve never thought of that.
Hmm Sorry but you have totally misrepresented the 4 inch lens. Your air assist is too far from the workpiece by about 2 inches. If you have an extension to put your nozzle down where it should be . The result will be glorious. The 4 inch lense is really only for thicker materials 18mm 3/4 etc. Its not really an engraving lens
What power or type of laser is required to use this spray to good effect? Currently i only have an Xtool F1 10w blue 2w IR. IR has not been working very well but my engraving room is 65 degrees. Reading the temp may be too low for IR?
I have not tried this type of spray with IR. I’ve only seen it work with a CO2 laser. That doesn’t mean it may not work with others but I would contact the manufacturer and see what they say.
